Watch the video and read:

Interviewer: And where do you live?
Alejandra: I live in Jacksonville, Florida, and I was born and raised in the Dominican Republic.
Interviewer: And how long did it take for you to learn English?
Alejandra: All my life. I still don't know very well.
Interviewer: But you speak very well. You communicate.
Alejandra: I try. I try.

PREVIEWS OF Lesson 23 - How long does it take?
and Lessons 32 and 33 - "Did" (the use of "did" with the Simple Past).

How long did it take you to learn English? = How much time was necessary for you to learn English?

Note: Alejandra makes one mistake here. She says "I still don't know very well". In fact, it is necessary to add an object in this case.
Example: "I still don't know English very well" or "I still don't know it very well" are correct.
